What A Great Love God Has Lavished On Us

1 John 3:1

It is difficult for me to appreciate just how much God loves us. John 3:16 tells us that God loved the world so much that he gave his Son for us. Other passages emphasize his love as well. But the true depth of the love that the infinite God has for us is really beyond our comprehension.

See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.

1 John 3:1 NIV

But in this verse, John refers to this love that God has, not for the world, but for his children. John says that it is a great love. And, likely because of the greatness of that love, the NIV translates ‘given’ as ‘lavished’. The love he has given us is beyond measure.

God’s Children

But John does give us a hint as to how great that love is. It is because of God’s love for us that he calls us his children. How great is that? He loved us so much that he has adopted into his family those who have responded to his offer of grace. We are not on the outside looking in. Instead, we are insiders, family members, having an intimate relationship with the creator of the universe.

John goes on to say that we are not just called children of God. But that we actually are his children. We do not yet know the fullness of what that means, but when Christ returns for us, we will, in some way, be like him. And knowing that should impact our every action and thought.

So, how great is God’s love for us? So great that he calls us his children. What could be greater than that?
