Devote Yourself to Prayer

Colossians 4:2

Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. (Colossians 4:2 NIV)

Have you spent time alone with God in prayer today? Prayer is an essential element of our lives as believers. You do not have to pray aloud with other believers. But you do need to spend time talking to God. Trying to have a relationship with God without prayer, is like trying to have a relationship with a spouse or friend who you never talk to. It does not work.

You do not have to find a dark closet to pray in. Nor do you always need to bow your head and close your eyes. All of those can be useful. But what is important is that you are spending time with God. And that you devote yourself to it. Don’t let anything get in the way of spending time alone with God.

Pour out your heart to God. He knows what is troubling you. But tell him anyway. Seek his direction for your life and service within the kingdom. Be wrestling in prayer for others and their work. And express thanksgiving and praise to the one who has saved you and brought you into the Kingdom of God. Devote yourself to prayer!

To be a Christian without prayer is no more possible than to be alive without breathing. (Martin Luther)

Just an old clay jar that God continues to see fit to use in his kingdom's work. I am retired, married with 2 children, and 4 grandchildren. I have followed Jesus for many years. And I love to share what He has given me from His word.

  1. This is a good study. For I am not praying correctly. This will help me learn how to pray. Is there a transcript that I can purchase? I heard the semons on Devote to prayer part one and two. Would like to hear them again but not able to find them.
    Thank you,

    • Thanks. But I think you might have this site confused with another. There are no sermons on A Clay Jar. Only written articles. And you can download and print any of them. They are all freely available.

    • Prayer is the way we talk to God. There is no specific formula you need to use. Just share with him what is on your heart.
