Giving Account to God – Hebrews 4:13

Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

Hebrews 4:13 NIV

This is a somewhat sobering verse. While I might take some pleasure in seeing the secrets of other people’s heart revealed, I certainly don’t want it to happen to me. But I am going to give an account of my life to God. And it is not just the public things that I will have to answer for. All of my thoughts, attitudes, secret activities as well as the more public stuff will be uncovered and laid bare before God. And I can just picture him saying “so what about this time when you . . . ? How did that glorify me?”

Now I don’t mean to suggest that my salvation will be based on anything I did or did not do. My salvation is totally the work of Christ. But the Scripture is clear that I am responsible for what I do with my life as a child of God. And my place in eternity would seem to some extent to depend on what I do with what God has given to me, whether talents, time, or resources (1 Cor. 3:10-15). I believe that the best way to prepare for giving account to God is simply to be faithful to the lordship of Christ; live in obedience to him. How great it will be on that day to hear God say to me, “Well done, good and faithful servant! (Matt. 25:21)”
