Offering a Sacrifice of Praise

Hebrews 13:15-16

Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise—the fruit of lips that openly profess his name. And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.

Hebrews 13:15-16 NIV

It is not uncommon to hear Christians express thankfulness that we no longer need to offer sacrifices. And while I know they are referring to animal sacrifices, it is not true that we no longer need to offer sacrifices. Romans 12:1 instructs us to offer the sacrifice of ourselves. And this passage in Hebrews identifies some specific ways we can offer that sacrifice of ourselves.

We should offer a continuous ‘sacrifice of praise’ to God. You might at first wonder how you could do that continuously. But I don’t think he means to just spend 24 hours a day saying ‘Praise the Lord.’ Rather, as one who has professed that Jesus is Lord, my speech should honor God in everything I say; my speech should praise him, reflecting his lordship in my life.

In addition, whenever I do good, helping another person or sharing with them, God considers that as a sacrifice to him and is pleased. Offer yourself as a living sacrifice, praising God with your speech and in your actions. That is what pleases him.
