They Refused to Love the Truth

They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.

2 Thessalonians 2:10b NIV

It is likely that you know someone who is “too smart” to believe in God, labeling him a fairy tale. The person who scoffs at anything that is said about God or spiritual truths. The one who delights in ridiculing belief and believers. And there are many others who are less vocal about their beliefs, but nonetheless, there is no place in their lives for God.

Why are some people like this? It may be that they have had a bad experience with a church or religious people. And they reacted by rejecting all the church represents. It may be that they trust in the gods of scientism, materialism, and intellectualism rather than in a God they cannot see and control. Or it may be that belief in God is inconvenient, hindering their ability to enjoy life to the fullest. And it could be any number of other reasons.

Why Reject the Truth?

But what is common to all of them is that they have rejected the truth. What truth is that? There are many truths that I can believe, or disbelieve, that have no real impact on my eternity. The news and social media make one truth claim after another. But none of them have eternal consequences. But there is one that does. Jesus claims to be the truth (John 14:6). Those who believe in him have eternal life, while those who do not are condemned for all eternity (John 3:16-18).

Don’t be ashamed of the truth. Love the truth. Boldly proclaim it. But recognize that there are some who will refuse to believe it. Pray for them, that God will bring them to their senses (2 Tim. 2:26). But don’t waste your time arguing with them (Matt. 7:6); it will accomplish nothing.

    • I have prayed for all three of you.

How can you know that you love Jesus? When he has first place in your life, over everything else in this world.
