“Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. – Joshua 1:7-8 NIV
I am not a Joshua, called to lead a mob of people into the promised land. Nor am I under the old covenant and the Law. But I still find that God’s instruction to Joshua here at the beginning of his time as the leader of Israel is pertinent.
The importance of the Bible in the Christian life cannot be over-stressed. There are many resources available to help me in my walk with God. But only the Bible is inspired by God to help me grow in maturity and service (2 Tim. 3:16-17). God speaks to me most clearly through the pages of his word. I need to read it, study it, meditate on it, and obey it. The more time I spend in the word, and the more I put it into practice, the more successful I will be in my walk with Christ.
Reading the Bible, and being a doer of the word (Jas. 1:22) will not make all of my problems in the world go away. It may actually make them worse. But it will draw me closer to God. And it is the key to a prosperous and successful spiritual journey.
