But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy.

Titus 3:4-5a NIV

In Acts 16:30, Paul is asked, “What must I do to be saved?” In the nearly 2000 years since then, that question has been answered in a variety of ways. Some would say that it is by living a good life. Some say that it is by believing in what Christ has done for you. Others say that it is by surrendering your life to Jesus. And still, others say that you can do nothing, that God chooses who he wants to be saved.

Paul makes it clear here that salvation does not come about because of any good thing I might do. I cannot earn my salvation in any way. It is God who saves me. Not because I am worthy. But because he is merciful.

I am so thankful that my salvation rests on the character and mercy of God. If it depended on me, and my performance, I would be lost, without hope. I have been saved solely because of his mercy. And not only me, but “all who call on the name of the Lord will be saved” (Acts 2:21). Have you called out to him? Have you experienced his mercy and salvation? If not, I would encourage you to do so before it is too late.
