Christmas Thoughts for 2018

Today is Christmas. A day for celebration and remembrance. Today is largely a secular holiday with lights and decorations, family and food, and exchanging of gifts. But for many it is also a time to remember the incarnation of Jesus. Of the time that God appeared to us as a tiny baby. Born into lowly circumstances. And, with a few exceptions, largely ignored by the world he created.

Jesus was probably not born on December 25th. And the Magi did not come to see him until some time after his birth. Our nativity scenes probably bear little resemblance to reality. And I suspect he really doesn’t care if we remember the time of his birth. Whether now, or at some other time during the course of the year. But I do believe that Christmas can, and should, have a place in the life of Jesus’ followers.

Use this Christmas as a time to remember, not so much the birth of a little baby. But as a time to remember the greatest gift of all. The gift of God’s Son, given so that we might have eternal life. And if you have never received this gift, I would encourage you to do so. What better time to know and experience the love of God. And the eternal life that comes through this one we remember today.

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 NIV
