The Heavens Declare the Glory of God

Psalms 19:1-6

The heavens declare the glory of God;
the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
Day after day they pour forth speech;
night after night they reveal knowledge.
They have no speech, they use no words;
no sound is heard from them.
Yet their voice goes out into all the earth,
their words to the ends of the world.
In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun.
It is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber,
like a champion rejoicing to run his course.
It rises at one end of the heavens
and makes its circuit to the other;
nothing is deprived of its warmth.

Psalm 19:1-6 NIV

I try to spend at least a couple of weeks out in the Olympic Mountains each summer. And when I do, the opening words of this psalm are frequently in my mind and on my lips. And not just because of the skies. All of the creation reveals itself in wonder and majesty.

The overwhelming diversity of life in the Olympics is impressive. How much more the one who produced it all. And I have no doubt that at least part of the reason he made them was for my pleasure.

The skies proclaim his glory. The majestic mountains rise up and point to him. The rushing rivers and streams sing his praise. The trees, the plants, the animals, the birds, and the insects are all living demonstrations of God’s greatness.

The heavens declare the glory of God! Oh Lord our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth.
