The Joy of Being Known by God

Psalm 139:1-6

Each of us is known by God. How does that make you feel? It overwhelmed the psalmist.

You have searched me, Lord,
and you know me.
You know when I sit and when I rise;
you perceive my thoughts from afar.
You discern my going out and my lying down;
you are familiar with all my ways.
Before a word is on my tongue
you, Lord, know it completely.
You hem me in behind and before,
and you lay your hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
too lofty for me to attain.

Psalm 139:1-6 NIV

When we were children, we were told that Santa Claus was watching us. That he knew when we’ve been good or bad. When you think about it, it’s kind of creepy, having someone watch everything you do. And this passage can cause the same reaction. But it is even worse than Santa Claus. God is even able to perceive our thoughts and unspoken words. Something beyond Santa’s ability.

Known by God

But this psalm is not intended to be an inducement to be good. Holding God’s constant surveillance over our heads. On the contrary, it is intended to express contentment and security. God knows me better than I know myself. He knows everything there is to know about me.

So why is that good? Because it enables him to do what is best for me. And because of that, I can trust him with my life and future.

Not only is he familiar with my ways. He also hems me in, behind and before. He has me wrapped up in his arms. Protecting me from all harm.

He has laid his hand on me. Like a parent laying their hand on their child. A sign of their presence, their love, and their protection. God is not distant from me. His hand is on me.

Oh, the joy of being known by God. Knowing how well God knows me. Knowing that he is protecting me. And knowing that he is near. That is so comforting. And it is more than I can comprehend. God is truly amazing!
