Craving Pure Spiritual Milk

1 Peter 2:2

Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.

1 Peter 2:2-3 NIV

To crave is to have a powerful desire. I suspect that there are few people who do not, at least occasionally, have cravings for something. A craving is often your body’s way of telling you that you need something. And that is the case in the example that Peter uses here with a newborn craving milk. The newborn desperately needs milk and cannot survive without it.

Crave the Word of God

And, in the same way that babies crave milk, we should feel a craving for God’s word, that pure spiritual milk. It is what will enable us to grow in our salvation, becoming all that God has called us to be. Just like the newborn will never grow and develop apart from milk, so we, apart from God’s word, will never mature and develop as believers.

Paul (1 Cor. 3:2) and the author of Hebrews (Heb. 5:12-13) also refer to milk. But they do so in a different sense. They are referring to the basics of the faith and encouraging us to grow beyond the simple truths of the faith. To grow deeper into the truths of our faith. But truths that are also contained in the Bible. Peter’s encouragement to us is to crave God’s word. To not be satisfied with the simple basic truths, as important as they are. But to grow ever deeper.

We should regularly spend time in the Scriptures and allow them to fill and nourish us. Don’t be satisfied with being a baby. Crave the milk of the word so that you can grow up in your salvation, becoming mature and fully equipped to serve (2 Tim. 3:16).

    • Indeed. While it is good to hear what others have to teach us. It is important that we also invest time and effort in our own studies of the Word of God.
