Lead Me To the Rock That Is Higher Than I

Psalm 61:1-4

Hear my cry, O God;
listen to my prayer.
From the ends of the earth I call to you,
I call as my heart grows faint;
lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
For you have been my refuge,
a strong tower against the foe.
I long to dwell in your tent forever
and take refuge in the shelter of your wings.

Psalm 61:1-4 NIV

We live in a time of great uncertainty and fear. As I write this, COVID-19 is spreading rapidly across the world and showing little sign of slowing down. And we are left to wonder what will come of it as nations find themselves unable to cope with the trauma and the death toll.

As God’s people, we cry out to him. As we find ourselves increasingly isolated from other people, we call out to the only one who really and truly cares about us—the one who can lift us above the circumstances of life and shelter us in his arms.

And that’s the cry of this psalm of David. Even as his heart grows faint. As he struggles to get through each day. As it seems like all is against him. He calls out to God. That God would lead him to the rock that is higher than David, or any other. For David, this rock is a strong and secure place of refuge. It is a place of protection from the arrows and slings of his enemies. David’s rock is God (Psalm 18:2).

Lead Me to the Rock

Our medical people are performing great heroics in caring for the victims of this virus. And scientists are working tirelessly for a vaccine and/or cure. And many others are actively involved in keeping us safe and providing essential services to us. But, in the end, our hope should be in God. Let him be the Rock of your life. A rock that cannot be shaken. A rock that is a strong tower against the foe.
