The Great Profession: My Lord and My God

John 20:28

A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”
Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!”
Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

John 20:26-29 NIV

When you think of the disciple Thomas, what first comes to mind? If you thought ‘doubting Thomas’ you are likely among the majority of people. Thomas’ refusal to believe the report of the other disciples seems to be what we focus on most. But that is not the only, or even the most significant, mention of Thomas in the gospels.

One week after Thomas objected to the resurrection of Jesus, he is with the other disciples when Jesus again appears to them. And this time Jesus specifically calls out Thomas, challenging him to believe, and showing him the proof he had demanded. And Thomas’ reaction this time is dramatically different.

The Great Profession

At Jesus’ initial appearance to the disciples, they were overjoyed to see him. They had their leader back among them, returned from the dead. But Thomas reacted differently. He called Jesus both Lord and God. For him, Jesus was not just resurrected. He now acknowledged him as God. This is the highest acknowledgment anyone gives to Jesus. Thomas may have had some doubts at the first report. But they were gone now. Replaced with a greatly enriched appreciation for just who this man was that he had followed for the past three years.

What about you and me? Are we happy to be in Jesus’ camp? Having him in our corner when the going gets rough? Just satisfied with him preparing a place for us in the future? Or do we fall on our faces before him, professing him to be Lord and God? Not just mouthing the words. But allowing him to be Lord and God over every aspect of our lives.
