A Divine Rescue Mission

Colossians 1:13

For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. (Colossians 1:13 NIV)

I like the picture that this verse paints. It reminds me of a scenario that is all too common today. Someone is being held as a hostage. And their outlook is bleak, and conditions are poor. But, in the nick of time, a rescue mission is launched. A mission that frees the captives and causes harm to the bad guys. It makes the headlines, and we cheer the heroic rescuers and rejoice with the rescued hostages.

And that is just what this verse is about. As humans, we were in bondage to sin, held captive by the devil and his followers. The outlook was hopeless. There was nothing we could do to free ourselves from the bondage we were in.

But God launched a divine rescue mission in the person of Jesus, his own Son. The rescue attempt appeared to end in failure, with the hero dying a criminal’s death. But appearances were deceiving. In his death, he defeated the one who had held us captive. And he set us free to live the life we were made for.

It is true that many of the hostages choose to remain behind in their captivity. But the rest are brought into the Kingdom of Christ and experience redemption, the forgiveness of sins. Jesus is the greatest of heroes, giving his life to free me from the shackles of my captivity, and to bring me into a life of freedom in Christ.
