Your love, LORD, reaches to the heavens,
Psalm 36:5-7 NIV
your faithfulness to the skies.
Your righteousness is like the highest mountains,
your justice like the great deep.
You, LORD, preserve both people and animals.
How priceless is your unfailing love, O God!
People take refuge in the shadow of your wings.
This psalm contrasts the way of the wicked with the unfailing and priceless love of God. The wicked flatter themselves in their own eyes. They build themselves up, even as they follow a sinful course that leads to destruction.
But when the psalmist turns his mind to consider God, he is overwhelmed. And his descriptions of God are filled with superlatives. In Psalm 36:5-6, he says that God’s love reaches the heavens. His faithfulness reaches to the skies. The Lord’s righteousness is like the highest mountain. And his justice is like the great deep. God is beyond measure.
We use the term ‘priceless’ to describe something that money cannot buy. The joy a newborn brings to its mother is priceless. As is the love of that mother for the child she holds. No amount of money could purchase those feelings. And that is how the psalmist views the unfailing love of God. It is priceless. No amount of money would enable him to buy God’s love. And it is worth more to him than anything money could buy.
God’s love is also described as unfailing. It is not here today and gone tomorrow. The love of one human for another may fail. It might grow cold, or be captured by another person. But not so God’s love. It is a love that we can depend on. And that is one of the reasons that it is priceless.
How precious is your unfailing love, O God! (NLT)
