Keep the Unity of the Spirit

Ephesians 4:3

Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.

Ephesians 4:3 NIV

Paul started this chapter off by urging us to do a number of things. And one of them is found in this verse. He urged us to keep the unity of the Spirit.

There are two aspects to the unity Paul describes here. It is the unity of the Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the one who unites us and draws us together. Apart from the work of the Holy Spirit the Church would not be able to rise above any human organization. But, thanks to the work of the Spirit, we can be the organic body of Christ.

But as followers of the Lord Jesus, we are urged to keep that unity. To keep something is to guard it. Even though the Holy Spirit is the one who unites us, I have a responsibility as well. I need to be careful not to do anything that would damage that unity.

And I do that through the bond of peace. One way that bond is translated is sinew. As sinews hold my bones together, so the peace of Christ (Col. 3:14) holds his body together. Whatever I do should work toward peace within the body. If my words or activities do not promote the peace of Christ and the unity of the Spirit, then they have no place.
