When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?”
John 21:15 NIV
“Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.”
Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.”
Peter is an interesting character. He rose to some amazing heights as a disciple and apostle of Jesus. But he also flamed out on occasion. Just a few days before this passage, Peter had denied three times that he even knew who Jesus was, much less being one of his followers.
But in spite of his denial, and all of his other failures, Jesus did not give up on him. He still had a job to do. Peter may have been broken. But he remained useful to Jesus, the healer of broken people. And in the end, he overcame his failures and faithfully served the Lord till the end of his life.
I am so thankful that Peter’s failures were not hidden or glossed over. It gives me hope that Jesus can, and will, use me in spite of my failures and shortcomings. I am broken. He is the great healer of broken people. I am looking forward to what he will be using me for.
