Sitting On the Fence Is Not an Option

“Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.

Luke 11:23 NIV

Some people today are committed to the Lordship of Jesus and seek to follow after him wherever he leads. At the other extreme, there is an increasing number of people who are hostile to Jesus and all who are his. And, in the middle, you will also find many who are indifferent, who are, so to say, sitting on the fence. Who give Jesus and his claim on our lives very little thought. They may intellectually acknowledge him, but nothing in their lives reflects knowing him. They are what some might call fence-sitters.

Jesus’ words in this verse are directed to this third group. If you are not for Jesus, then you are against him. If you are not actively working for him, then you are working against him. There is no middle ground. You cannot sit on that fence. If you try, you will fall off on the side of opposition.

I wonder how many of us who claim the name of Christ, are active in the Church, and do all of the right Christian things will find that they have been opposing Christ. It’s not enough to listen to the right kind of music, buy the right stuff, and say amen during a sermon. Jesus does not want our outward acts of piety. He wants hearts that are devoted to him. If they are not, then we are on the wrong side of the fence.
