May My Meditation be Pleasing to God

I will sing to the LORD all my life;
I will sing praise to my God as long as I live.
May my meditation be pleasing to him,
as I rejoice in the LORD.

Psalm 104:33-34 NIV

The psalmist’s joy in the Lord is evident here. He wants to sing the praises of God for as long as he has breath. And this psalm is filled with praise for all that God has done in his creation. His work is truly amazing. I believe the whole creation does sing the praises of its creator. At least to those with ears to hear it.

In addition to singing God’s praise, the psalmist prays that his thoughts, or meditations, would be pleasing to God. Especially as he praises God. At times I find this to be especially challenging in my own life. I come to worship God, whether together with his church, or alone. But, while the words coming from my mouth might be expressions of praise, my thoughts don’t always reflect that. And that is especially true when in corporate worship.

All too frequently, I find myself being critical of one of the worship leaders. Of the music selections. Of the people around me who refuse to wear masks. Or even distracted by what I am planning on doing later in the day. My thoughts in those times do not reflect the words coming out of my mouth. So, with the psalmist, I pray that the Lord would cleanse my thoughts so that they might be pleasing to him. May the meditation of my heart and mind be truly pleasing to God as I lift up praises to his name.
