But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.

Give Thanks to the Lord

Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good;
his love endures forever. - 1 Chronicles 16:34 NIV

Today, in the United States, is Thanksgiving. It is a day set aside on our calendar for giving thanks. And I believe that is especially appropriate in these challenging times. COVID-19 is still raging around the world with deadly effect. The measures taken to minimize its spread and severity have been controversial. The political atmosphere in our country is toxic and divided. The social fabric that has held us together seems to be unraveling quickly.  It would be easy to fall into the trap of thinking that there is not much to be thankful for this year.

But I am thankful. Grateful to the one I have committed my life to. While the world around me may be chaotic, he is a rock I can cling to. As David did in 1 Chronicles 16:7-36, I can always look back and see his hand at work in my life. And I can look forward with the expectation that he will continue to care for me, using all that happens to help me to grow as his child (James 1:2-4). Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good and his love lasts forever!
