When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

Jesus’ last words on the cross were “it is finished.” What was it that was finished? Clearly, his life was finished. As soon as he said this he gave up his spirit and died. The agony of the cross was over. But I believe he meant more than just that.
The author of Hebrews goes to great lengths to demonstrate that Jesus was a superior high priest offering a superior sacrifice. A sacrifice of atonement that could take away our sin. That sacrifice was of himself there on the cross. And, when Jesus said “it is finished”, that sacrifice had been made. The sin of the world was atoned for (1 John 2:2). Now, all who come to Christ in faith can experience new life in him.
