Jesus As the Agent of Creation

Hebrews 1:2

Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world.

Hebrews 1:1-2 (ESV)

Who is Jesus? We most often think of Him as the incarnate Son of God who was born in Bethlehem, spent three years in a teaching and healing ministry, went to the cross as an atoning sacrifice for our sins, and rose again on the third day. He is our redeemer and savior. But He is much more than that.

John 1:1-18, Philippians 2:5-10, Colossians 1:15-20, and Hebrews 1:1-4 all paint a much deeper picture of who Jesus is. And one aspect of that is that Jesus was the agent of creation. God created the world through Him. John 1:3 affirms that all things that were made were made by the Word. Colossians 1:16 expresses that all things in both the material and spiritual realms were created by Him and for Him.

The first chapter of Genesis is an account of creation. And in each step of creation, we find the expression, “And God said, let there be…and it was.” God spoke creation into existence. How? By His Word (John 1:3), Jesus, the agent of creation.

That one who was born to a virgin in Bethlehem; who walked this earth for some 33 years, healing, teaching, and performing miraculous signs; who went to the cross, dying for my sins; rose on the third day; and ascended into heaven was more than just a man. He is my creator. The one who made everything that has been made, entered into His creation, became like me, and gave Himself for me. My creator died for me so that I could have life with Him. How amazing is that?
