Lord, I Believe, Help My Unbelief

Mark 9:24

A father with a demon-possessed, or epileptic, son brought the boy to Jesus to have him healed. If Jesus can. Jesus responded that everything is possible for the one who believes. And the quote below is the father’s response to Jesus.

I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!

Mark 9:24b NIV

The father’s words here really strike a chord with me, and I periodically echo his cry. I believe. But sometimes it seems that belief is pretty shallow and does not have the impact on my life that it should.

Struggle With Unbelief

There is no doubt in my mind that God exists and that He has a purpose for me. I am convinced that God inspired the Bible and that faith in Jesus’ death and resurrection is necessary to enter into a relationship with God. And I have committed my life to the lordship of Jesus. I believe! And yet I struggle with unbelief.

If I really and truly believed that this world and all that it contains are only temporary and that I was created for something more than this, would it not have a greater impact on how I live now? Wouldn’t it affect every area of my life? Would I not hold to the things of this life much more loosely?

I don’t want to be so heavenly-minded that I am no earthly good. But I would love to be so heavenly-minded that I live this life in surrender to my Lord, making an impact for Him in all I do.

I believe. But unfortunately, my belief does not always translate well into practical terms. Lord, help me in my unbelief!
