The Source of Wisdom

Job 28:28

Where then does wisdom come from?
Where does understanding dwell?

Job 28:28 NIV

The 28th chapter of Job is very interesting. In the middle of Job’s defense of himself to his friends, there is suddenly a chapter discussing wisdom and where it might be found.

Job 28:1-11 describes mining operations. Humans have tunneled deep within the earth where no beast or bird ever goes. Gold and silver, iron and copper, and precious gems are taken from deep within the earth. Nothing on earth is hidden from us or out of our reach. But where can wisdom and understanding be found?

What value can be placed on wisdom? Job 28:12-19 tells us that even the most precious items on earth are not sufficient to buy wisdom. Its value is far above the finest gold or most precious jewels.

So what is the source of wisdom? How can we obtain it? Job 28:20-27 tells us that God alone knows the way to wisdom. It is found only in Him.

Job closes this discussion by saying, “The fear of the Lord—that is wisdom, and to shun evil is understanding” (Job 28:28). Wisdom and understanding cannot be found apart from fearing the Lord and walking with Him. Many other sources will claim to be able to impart wisdom and understanding. But they are only a pale imitation of the true wisdom and understanding that comes from God alone.

  1. I am publicly sorry & humiliated, that I’m 80 years old & just now, along with tidbits picked up along the way, coming to know about the wisdom & understanding, to be found in the Bible. I am very happy I found the Clay Jar, it is a great place to look for Jesus & his many miracles.
