The Pattern of Sound Teaching

What you heard from me, keep as the pattern of sound teaching, with faith and love in Christ Jesus.

2 Timothy 1:13 NIV

When this letter was written, Paul was in a Roman prison awaiting execution. He was hoping to see Timothy again before the end, but there was no assurance that it would happen. So, throughout this letter, Paul was preparing Timothy to carry on without him, proclaiming the truth that Paul had given his life for. And he encouraged Timothy to hold on to the pattern of sound teaching he had received from Paul.

Timothy had been like a son to Paul. They had traveled together for many years, and Timothy had heard Paul speak many times. And, no doubt, they spent many an hour studying and discussing the truths Paul had learned from his study and by revelation from Jesus (Gal. 1:11-12). And here he encouraged Timothy to continue teaching what he had learned from Paul. Later, he urged Timothy to also pass on these truths to others who would, in turn, be able to teach and pass them on (2 Tim. 2:2).

While this instruction was specifically for Timothy, it is just as appropriate for every believer today. The pattern of sound teaching is what conforms to Scripture. But too many believers have only a dim grasp of what the Scripture teaches. Consequently, they may be easily led into error. And be unable to pass on their faith to others. We need to become thoroughly familiar with what the Scripture says, hold firmly to it, reject any teaching not grounded in Scripture, and pass on our faith to the next generation. And we need to do that with faith and love in the Lord Jesus. Our lives and words should conform to what the Scripture teaches.
