A Cry for Justice

Psalm 10:14-15

But you, God, see the trouble of the afflicted;
you consider their grief and take it in hand.
The victims commit themselves to you;
you are the helper of the fatherless.
Break the arm of the wicked man;
call the evildoer to account for his wickedness
that would not otherwise be found out.

Psalm 10:14-15 NIV

The early part of this psalm describes those who enrich themselves at the expense of others. The psalmist describes them as arrogant, wicked, and proud. They have no place for God in their life. And they expect never to be called to account for their actions. Their victims cry out for justice, but their cries appear to be unheard.

This is not a condition that was unique to ancient Israel. At every time and every place, there are those who take advantage of others. People who pervert justice with impunity. But do they really?

As the psalmist expresses, God does see the trouble of the afflicted. He knows the grief they experience at the hands of wicked men and will not forget it. While human courts may ignore their cries for justice, they will not be ignored by God. He will break the oppressor’s power and call them to account for the harm they have done.

If you find yourself a victim of wicked men, it is OK to seek justice in human courts as well as from God. But whether you experience justice in this life or not, commit yourself to God, trusting that justice will come. Even if it is delayed, the wicked will ultimately be held accountable for their actions. While those who have committed themselves to God will experience the joys of eternal life with God.
