A Willing Spirit

“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her. (Luke 1:38 NIV)

Six months after Gabriel told Zachariah that he would have a son, he appeared to Mary and told her she would also have a son. And not just any son. Mary will bear the Son of God.

But there was a potential problem. Mary was going to be an unwed mother in a culture in which that was a stoning offense; stoning as in throwing rocks at a person until they were dead. What a remarkable young lady to submit to God like that. I’m afraid I would have been tempted to tell him to find someone else or ask what I had done to deserve this. Unlike Mary, who, with a willing spirit, responded with, “Let’s do this.” What an example she set for the rest of us.
