The Word of God Is Alive and Active

Hebrews 4:12

For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. (Hebrews 4:12 NIV)

The Word (logos) of God! This is a title that we often confer upon the Bible. But it means much more than just the words on a printed page or screen. Those are just words. Words that have been given to us by God. But still, just words. With no power of their own.

In the beginning was the Word (logos), and the Word (logos) was with God, and the Word (logos) was God” (John 1:1). Jesus is the Word of God. And his Spirit is active and alive in the lives of his people. The Holy Spirit can penetrate into the deepest recesses of our being. Nothing is hidden from him (Heb. 4:13). He knows me better than I know myself, including the thoughts and attitudes of my heart. There are times when I don’t know why I feel a certain way. But he does.

The Holy Spirit makes the words of my Bible come alive, using them to teach me and to bring correction when I need it. The presence of the Holy Spirit is the key to unlocking the Scriptures. Without him, they are just words. With him, they are alive and active, reaching down into the depths of my being where they can do the most good.

Spend time with the Word of God. Let God’s Spirit make the words in your Bible come alive and be active in your life. It will transform you.
