Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.

Joshua 1:9 NIV

Joshua is one of my hero’s from the Old Testament. He was Moses’ assistant for much of his life. He went up Mt Sinai and into the Tent of Meeting with Moses. And he led the army of Israel in their battles. But now Moses was gone, and God had appointed Joshua to take his place. He had some big shoes to fill. And he may have been apprehensive about it. Three times God told Joshua to be strong and courageous (Jos. 1:6, 7, 9).

God told him not to be afraid of the enemy who awaited him on the other side of the Jordan. And not to be discouraged because of those he has been tasked with leading. Joshua would have been justified in being afraid and discouraged. Except for one thing. God had given this task to him. And he would not have to do it on his own. God would be with him each step of the way.

God’s words to Joshua apply to everyone who follows the Lord Jesus. Each of us is called to serve the Lord in some way. And, as we faithfully serve in the place he has given us, we can be strong and courageous, despite challenges we may face, because the Lord our God will be with us in all we do. And so there is no reason to be afraid or become discouraged.
