I worked for many years as a Computer Engineer for the government. When I first started, not much was expected of me. I knew little and had no experience. There was not much I was capable of doing. However, as the years went on, I learned more about my trade and gained valuable experience. And more was expected of me then.
I came to faith in the Lord Jesus over 50 years ago now. At the time, I had only a limited understanding of who God was and what he expected of me. I was like a brand new employee, starting on the ground floor. Not much was expected of me.
But as the years have passed, I have learned more and he has entrusted me with greater ability and responsibility. And more is expected of me now than 50 years ago.
The Expectation of Growth
Growth is expected of me. Whether it is physical development or ability as an employee or follower of Jesus. It would raise serious concerns about me if I never progressed beyond being a toddler. If I stayed at a new employee level for long, I would likely be looking for a new job.
And the same is true of me as a believer. As the years go by, I should be progressing in my faith. Yet, how often does our development as believers stall in the infant stage? And we think nothing of it.
Jesus tells us, “To whom much is given, much will be required.” He will hold me accountable for how I have used the gifts he has given me and the responsibilities assigned to me. And that includes how I have invested the years he has given me. Is my master pleased with my growth and service? What will he have to say about me when I stand before him on that day?
