“Come, all you who are thirsty,
Isaiah 55:1-2 NIV
come to the waters;
and you who have no money,
come, buy and eat!
Come, buy wine and milk
without money and without cost.
Why spend money on what is not bread,
and your labor on what does not satisfy?
Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good,
and you will delight in the richest of fare.
There is a yearning within most people for something beyond what they have. And we all too often seek to fulfill that yearning by accumulating more and better things. Or by a myriad of different activities that promise to satisfy our longing. But no amount of possessions or activities will fill that need. The best they can do is mask the hunger and thirst for a while. But they are never enough to satisfy fully.
These verses are an invitation. An invitation to those with a hunger and thirst this world cannot satisfy. Come to the Lord’s table and be satisfied. It is offered freely to all who will come.
Filling the Deep Yearning
The salvation that God offers to us can fully and completely satisfy us. In this life, we may still experience physical want and need. But the deep yearning in our lives for something more will be satisfied by the one who created us and knows us best. To all those who come to Him, He will fill that emptiness. And He will fill us with hope for that heavenly banquet He has prepared for us.
“Come, all you who are thirsty.” “Why spend money on what does not satisfy?” Listen to the Lord. Come to Him and “you will delight in the richest of fare.“
