What Do You Take Pride in?

Jeremiah 9:23-24

This is what the LORD says:
“Let not the wise boast of their wisdom
or the strong boast of their strength
or the rich boast of their riches,
but let the one who boasts boast about this:
that they have the understanding to know me,
that I am the LORD, who exercises kindness,
justice and righteousness on earth,
for in these I delight,”
declares the LORD.

Jeremiah 9:23-24 NIV

There are many things in this world that people might boast about or take pride in. Some take pride in their education, knowledge, and wisdom. And some do indeed have much knowledge and wisdom. Others might take pride in their strength or athletic prowess. Or in the power and influence they wield. And indeed, there are influential people in our world today. Some might take pride in their great wealth and possessions. And some in this world have been blessed with much.

But God, speaking through the prophet Jeremiah, warns us against taking pride in ourselves, in what we have, and in our own accomplishments. Instead, we should take pride in knowing our Lord. Not because we are worthy in any way. But because of who He is and what He has done. He exercises kindness, justice, and righteousness on the earth and delights in those things. His kindness, justice, and righteousness are most clearly seen in the person of His Son, Jesus. And in what He has done for us.

Be proud of God and boast in Him. Tell others what great things He has done for you. Let your security and joy be in Him rather than your wisdom, strength, or wealth.
