Campaigning for elected office season seems to be nearly non-stop in the United States. Candidates go to great lengths to convince voters that they are the best choice. That they will be able to solve the problems of our nation, state, or city. Their call is for us to put our trust in them. And many people have. Some of our politicians have rabid followings—people who believe their candidate is the only hope for our nation.
Do not put your trust in princes,
Psalm 146:3-5 NIV
in human beings, who cannot save.
When their spirit departs, they return to the ground;
on that very day their plans come to nothing.
Blessed are those whose help is the God of Jacob,
whose hope is in the LORD their God.
Those we elect for public office may indeed govern wisely and prove beneficial to the nation, state, or city they serve. And they may be worthy of our trust, at least in a limited sense. But, as the psalmist says here, our real hope and faith are best placed in the Lord our God.
Our political leaders are human, just like us. And in the end, they cannot save us. Only God can save. And only He is worthy of our faith and trust. When you have the opportunity to vote, do so. Make the best choices you can for the elected leaders who will lead us. But don’t put your trust in them to save us. Put your trust in God and His salvation rather than our human leaders. In the end, only He can truly save us.
