Polls about religion in America show distressing trends. Many are abandoning the faith. Others are turning away from biblical orthodoxy and adopting more progressive or liberal views on the Bible, God, sin, and salvation. And many within the church and the culture around us consider biblical morality outdated.
But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.
2 Timothy 3:14-15 NIV
All of this makes Paul’s words to Timothy appropriate to us today. “But as for you, continue in what you have learned and become convinced of.” Don’t be swayed by the voices around you that argue against the relevance of the Scripture for life today, especially concerning issues of morality. And don’t fall prey to those who advocate doctrines contrary to the Scripture. Instead, hold firmly to God’s inspired and authoritative word, regardless of what others around you may do.
Paul goes on to say that “the Holy Scriptures are able to make us wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.” My salvation is through faith in Christ and in him alone. But it is God’s word to us, the Bible, that will guide us along our journey of faith. It gives us the wisdom to discern truth from falsehood and to grow up in our faith. So, as for you, continue to hold firmly to God’s inspired and authoritative word. Let nothing move you away from it.
