His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.

2 Peter 1:3 NIV

This is an amazing promise. As a believer, I have been called to live a godly life. And that is not always easy. In fact, it can be quite challenging at times. My old nature frequently rears its ugly head and entices me into satisfying its desires. And the influence of an ungodly world can sometimes be challenging to resist.

But fortunately, I am not expected to live a godly life in my strength. Christ’s divine power has given me everything I need to live a godly life. With his power at work in my life, godliness is possible. He is quite capable of accomplishing what I cannot do alone.

In this verse, Peter tells us that Christ’s enabling power comes to us through our knowledge of him. We come to know him when we respond to his call and come into a relationship with him. But we should continue to grow in our knowledge of him, spending time with him in his word and prayer. The better I come to know him, the more his power can work through me.

We have been given everything needed to live godly lives. When we fail to live that life, it is not because it can’t be done, but because we are trying to do it on our own. Trust God, and allow his power to work through you as you grow in your knowledge of the one who has called you to himself. That’s the secret to godliness.
