And God is able to make all grace overflow to you so that because you have enough of everything in every way at all times, you will overflow in every good work.
2 Corinthians 9:8 NET
Paul had a concern for the saints in and around Jerusalem. They were poor and struggling. So Paul had organized a collection among the Gentile churches he had started. A collection to help them financially. But also to demonstrate love to them.
The Corinthian church was financially well off and previously had generously pledged to support this offering. However, Paul was unsure of them as he wrote this, encouraging them to follow through on their commitment.
It may be that the church was reluctant to contribute so generously because it might leave them less financially secure. But Paul told them here that God could make all grace abound to them. God could give them all that they needed and beyond. As a result, they could abound to every good work, including this offering.
The expression “You can’t outgive God” may come from this verse. God’s grace can supply us with all we need so that whatever we do for him will prosper. If God lays it on your heart to do something, he will also ensure you have all you need: money, talents, time, and other resources to accomplish the good work. And that includes generously contributing to the needs of others.
I have found this to be true in my own life. No matter how much God leads me to give, there is always enough. God’s grace overflows for every good work.
