Reviving the Heart of the Contrite

Isaiah 57:15

For this is what the high and exalted One says—
he who lives forever, whose name is holy:
“I live in a high and holy place,
but also with the one who is contrite and lowly in spirit,
to revive the spirit of the lowly
and to revive the heart of the contrite.

Isaiah 57:15 NIV

These words from Isaiah are an invitation from God. God who is high and exalted and who lives in a high and holy place. Who lives forever. And who is the creator and sustainer of all that is, including humanity.

But he will also live with the one who is contrite and lowly in spirit—the one who repents of their evil and humbles themself before the Lord. The high and exalted God will come down to our level and live with us. When I consider how insignificant I am in the grandeur of his creation, I find it amazing that he cares so much for me. Yet he does. He cares for me more than I can possibly know.

And he cares for me, not for his own benefit, but for mine. He revives my spirit and heart, giving me a new life. A new life lived in the presence of the God of all creation. A new life that will never come to an end and will never grow old.

This invitation to new life is offered to all who will repent and humbly turn to him. He will revive the spirit of the lowly and the heart of the contrite. And his Spirit will make his home within us, guiding and comforting us through all that we face.
