Psalms 118:29 (ESV)

This psalm opens and closes with the same words, “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good.” Thanksgiving to God should be a natural reaction to all that God has done for us.

I am thankful for the family he has given me: my parents, my wife, our children, and our grandchildren. I am thankful for the beautiful creation I can enjoy, for the home that shelters me, the job that has provided me with a decent retirement, and the family and friends who make up the community of believers we are a part of.

And I am thankful that He rescued me from the empty way of life that I was heading down. That He has adopted me as His child and into His family. I am grateful for His Spirit who lives within me, providing me with assurance and direction. I am humbled that He has chosen to use me in the way that He has. And I am grateful for the eternal future that I have in Christ.

There is so much to be thankful for. But most of all, I am thankful for who God is. He is good. I can trust that He is always good in all He does. And I do not have to worry about God interacting with me in a way that is less than good. I do not always understand the goodness of His ways. But I can trust that they are.

And God’s love endures forever. Forever is a long time. And that is how long I can depend on God’s love for me. He does not give up on me, no matter how many times I fail Him. And His steadfast love will endure. Throughout this life and into eternity.

Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good;
for his steadfast love endures forever!

Psalms 118:29 (ESV)
