Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good.
His love endures forever.

Psalm 136:1 NIV

How often do you give thanks to the Lord? We might often thank him for something he has just done. But how often do we give thanks for all he has done throughout history?

That is essentially what this psalm is. The psalmist thanked God for his work in creation. For the deliverance of Israel from Egypt. The crossing of the Red Sea. For giving them the land they lived in. And for their daily protection and provision.

This psalm has 26 verses, each recounting something the Lord had done or is doing. And at the end of each verse, the psalmist expressed that God’s love endures forever. Everything that God does for us is because of his love. A love that is not fickle and changing. But a love that lasts forever.

It is good to periodically take the time to echo the thoughts of this psalm, thanking God for the love he has shown us in all he has done.

  • For his creation.
  • For his work of redemption throughout history.
  • For Jesus, who gave himself for us.
  • For the salvation we can have because of what he did.
  • For the Scripture he provided us, helping us to know and walk with him.
  • For the Church he has established, made us a part of, and equipped us to serve in.
  • For the eternal future we have with him.
  • For our family history that has shaped who we are.
  • For his daily provision in our own lives.
  • And for so many other things that he has done.

Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good. His love endures forever.
