Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat.

2 Peter 3:11-12 NIV

The Scripture is clear that the Lord Jesus will return to the earth one day for His chosen ones. And when He does, the creation as we know it will be destroyed and recreated into our new home for eternity. The words Peter gives us here come in the midst of one of these passages that describe the end.

How should we live as we wait for the Lord’s return? I believe that the answer to that question is more important than the when and how of His return. Peter tells me to strive for godliness and holiness as I look forward to that day. To live a holy and godly life means turning from the things of this world and setting my heart on things above. That I live for the one who has redeemed me and will rescue me from the destruction this world faces.

And, as I do, I will somehow speed the coming of that day. So, look forward to that day when our Lord will return. Live a holy and godly life as you wait. And speed its coming as you do.
