An Expression of God's Sovereignty

Isaiah 40:21-24

Do you not know?
Have you not heard?
Has it not been told you from the beginning?
Have you not understood since the earth was founded?
He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth,
and its people are like grasshoppers.
He stretches out the heavens like a canopy,
and spreads them out like a tent to live in.
He brings princes to naught
and reduces the rulers of this world to nothing.
No sooner are they planted,
no sooner are they sown,
no sooner do they take root in the ground,
than he blows on them and they wither,
and a whirlwind sweeps them away like chaff.

Isaiah 40:21-24 NIV

This is such a wonderful expression of the sovereignty of God. He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth. And all of us who live on the earth are like grasshoppers to Him. That really helps to put things into perspective. Whenever I might start to think too highly of myself, I need to remember that I am only like a grasshopper, or even less, in God’s sight.

God is the creator of the heavens and earth. He has formed them as He wished them to be. Whatever the mechanism of creation, He is the architect and builder. And He also rules over the affairs of humanity. The powerful peoples of this world are as nothing to Him. He raises them up. And He lowers them back down. No one has the power or ability to overrule God and His plans.

Recognizing the Sovereignty of God

Do you not know? Have you not heard? The sovereignty of God is something that we all should know and understand. We may not know many things about God. But that He is ruler over all the works of His hands should be obvious. And that we are far beneath Him should be clear as well. But all too often, we live as though we were in charge. How much better our lives would be if we recognized His sovereignty and submitted to Him.
