Followup on the Kalam Cosmological Argument

I have had some interesting twitter feedback on my recent post on the Kalam Cosmological Argument and thought it would be worthwhile to share some of it, mostly because it illustrates some of the response that you might expect from an atheist when making this argument. Before looking at the response it is worth pointing out my position in regard to this argument.  First, I do not believe that it is possible to prove the existence of God, and I do not use the Kalam argument for that purpose.  Second, I believe in God because of my own personal experience with …

The Kalam Cosmological Argument

The Kalām  Cosmological argument is one of the simplest and most effective arguments for the existence of a creator.  It goes like this: Whatever begins to exist has a cause The universe began to exist Therefore, the universe has a cause Whatever begins to exist has a cause This premise is simple and intuitively obvious.  We have no examples of something beginning to exist without a cause.  Some will bring out the example of quantum particles appearing, seemingly coming into existence without a cause.  But this is more likely an example of something with an unknown cause.  Seldom will anyone really challenge …

Introduction to Apologetics

What is Apologetics? The American Heritage Dictionary defines apologetics as (1) the branch of theology that is concerned with defending or proving the truth of Christian doctrine, and (2) formal argumentation in defense of something, such as a position or system.  Formally, then, Christian apologetics is a specific area of study that is directly concerned with proving a defense for the Christian faith to those who are challenging the beliefs of Christianity.  But apologetics is not just a field that should be left to trained theologians.  Apologetics should be a concern for every believer who is interested in reaching the …

I Believe In a Creator

I believe that the universe we live in was created: that there is a creator.  While I cannot prove that to anyone, it does make more sense to me than any alternative I have heard of, and I suspect that I have heard of most of them, especially those put forward from the scientific community.

Creation and the Big Bang

The Big Bang is a fairly well established scientific theory that describes the beginning of the universe.  According to this theory, some 13.8 billion years ago, our universe began to exist, initially as an extremely dense and hot point.  That ‘singularity’, began to rapidly expand and cool, eventually forming simple atomic elements which gravity clumped into stars and galaxies, ultimately producing the universe we see around us today.  The link above provides a decent description, while this one offers a much simpler overview. While the Big Bang does have pretty strong scientific support, how compatible is it with the Genesis accounts, and …

How Big Is God?

One of my favorite web sites is The Scale of the Universe. This is an interactive site that helps to give a perspective on just how big things are in the universe.  I find it interesting to scroll through the site, comparing the size of different objects.

What If There Were No God?

The title question is one that came to me while tramping along the Pacific Crest Trail last month.  I do not really have a wonderful answer to it, but do have some thoughts.  Obviously it would make a tremendous difference in our eternity if there was no God.  And it would make a difference to those of us who walk with him now.  But what about the world in general? What would be the ramifications in our world if there really was no God?  While most people would say that things would be different, there are those who will answer …

Why God?

I am encountering more and more folks who have rejected, not only God, but even the possibility that there might be something that is beyond what their senses can experience.  I have talked with a number of these atheists, mostly online, over the past 8 years or so, have listened to their explanations, have tried to understand their reasoning, and evaluated my own beliefs.  But to no avail. Atheism remains to me a hollow and deceptive philosophy that glorifies mankind and our achievements;  that has no purpose for life other than what the individual chooses to give themselves; and has no …
