In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food!
Hebrews 5:12 NIV
The author of Hebrews was writing to believers and he appeared to be somewhat frustrated with them. He had a lot to say about Jesus, who he was, and what he did for us. And yet, according to the previous verse, they seem disinterested. They have been believers long enough now that they should be qualified to be teachers, passing on what they know to newer believers. And yet they were still in the infant stage, learning the same rudimentary lessons over and over again. They were still drinking milk when by this time they should be eating solid food.
It is sad that so many believers today are content to just review the same elementary lessons over and over again. We would think it strange and worrisome if a 30-year-old ate and acted like a 2-year-old. But for some reason, we are quite accepting of the same situation in our spiritual lives. Not every believer is going to be a scholar. But we all should be growing ever deeper in our faith.
Dig into God’s word. Don’t be content with just the elementary truths it contains; start eating some steak. Grow in your faith and in turn, help those who are just starting the journey.
