The Glory Due his Name – Psalm 96:7-10

For great is the LORD and most worthy of praise;
he is to be feared above all gods.
For all the gods of the nations are idols,
but the LORD made the heavens.
Splendor and majesty are before him;
strength and glory are in his sanctuary.
Ascribe to the LORD, all you families of nations,
ascribe to the LORD glory and strength.
Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name;
bring an offering and come into his courts.
Worship the LORD in the splendor of his holiness;
tremble before him, all the earth.
Say among the nations, “The LORD reigns.”
The world is firmly established, it cannot be moved;
he will judge the peoples with equity.

Psalm 96:4-10 NIV

Many of the Psalms are songs of mourning, or calling on God to execute judgement on the psalmist’s enemies. But there are also songs of praise, and this is one of them.

Giving Glory to God

This psalm exalts the Lord, claiming that he is most worthy of praise. And then it proceeds to offer him praise. The Lord is high above all other gods. It is the Lord who is our creator. Splendor and majesty describe him. Strength and glory are where he is. The psalmist here calls on all people to give the Lord the glory due to him and to worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness.

God has no need that I can fill by giving glory to him or by worshipping him in the splendor of his holiness. God does not need to have his ego stroked by having his creation praise him. But the natural response that should be expected from one who comes into his presence is to glorify and honor him.

Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name!
Worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness!

Let that be your ever present attitude. Not just on Sunday morning or certain special occasions. But always.
