Open my eyes that I may see
Psalms 119:18 NIV
wonderful things in your law.
I suspect that most people have heard that the Bible is the best-selling book of all time. According to an article in the New Yorker that I have recently read, it is also the best-selling book every year, far outselling every other book. This article also, quoting from a Barna Group survey, claims that 47% of Americans read the Bible at least once a week. And that 91% of American households own a Bible. With the average being four Bibles per household. The market is saturated. Yet the Bible continues to outsell every other book.
Whether you agree with the statistics given above or not, it is hard to deny that the Bible is still a very popular book and that many people read it. But I have to wonder how much value it has to those who read it. Many people seem to read it as they would any other book. There are some who read it in order to discredit it and those who value it. And there are many who read it as God’s inspired word.
But how many follow the guidance of this verse? Seeking that God would open their eyes to see the wonderful things contained in the Bible. If indeed, as I believe, the Bible is inspired by God, then who better to guide us through it than the Holy Spirit? Only he is able to give us instruction in the depths of wisdom contained within its pages. As you read the Bible, seek the wisdom of the Holy Spirit. And be open to his instruction.
