It is God who arms me with strength
Psalm 18:32-35 NIV
and keeps my way secure.
He makes my feet like the feet of a deer;
he causes me to stand on the heights.
He trains my hands for battle;
my arms can bend a bow of bronze.
You make your saving help my shield,
and your right hand sustains me;
your help has made me great.
King David was a warrior, and many of his psalms, including this one, reflect that. David was not just a warrior. He was a powerful and highly successful warrior, overcoming much stronger enemies. But David did not take credit for his success on the battlefield. He attributed that success to the Lord. The Lord gave him the ability he had, watched over him, and shielded him in battle. And David was quick to credit the Lord who had enabled him.
I am not a warrior, at least in the physical realm. But what David says here about his life is just as true for me. God has called me to serve him. He arms me with the strength I need. He keeps my way secure. And his mighty right hand sustains me. I can do all things through him who strengthens me (Phil. 4:13).
And that is true for everyone who has taken up their cross to follow Jesus. We are all different, and God has called us to serve him in different ways. But regardless of the task he has given us, he is also faithful to ensure we can successfully accomplish it. If, like David, we trust him, he will train our hands for the battle. His right hand will sustain us. And his help will give us victory.
