Search Me, God, and Know My Heart

Search me, God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.
See if there is any offensive way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting.

Psalm 139:23-24 NIV

It is easy to go through my day without thinking about how pleasing my ways might be to the Lord. My day is typically filled with activities that, at least on the surface, would seem good. I spend time in prayer and Bible study every day. I write about what I have read and share it with the world. And, as an old retired codger, I spend the rest of the day puttering around the house and gardens. I live what seems like a good and decent life.

But David reminds me that there is more to my life than what is happening on the outside. What is the condition of my heart? What am I thinking about as I putter around the house? As I wander through the neighborhood? As I read the news reports of all that is happening in the world? And as I interact with the people I encounter, both in-person and online?

David’s prayer should be mine as well. Search me, God, and know my heart. Reveal any offensive thoughts and attitudes that have no place in my life. Create in me a pure heart (Ps. 51:10). So that the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart might be pleasing in your sight (Ps. 19:14).

Just an old clay jar that God continues to see fit to use in his kingdom's work. I am retired, married with 2 children, and 4 grandchildren. I have followed Jesus for many years. And I love to share what He has given me from His word.
