Hold Unswervingly to Hope

Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.

Hebrews 10:23 NIV

A significant concern of the author of Hebrews was that his readers would remain faithful to the Lord despite all they were going through (Heb. 10:32-35). Life was not easy for those early believers. They faced opposition from all sides. And it would have been very tempting to give up, returning to the life they had before coming to Christ, fitting in with the people around them.

These early believers had the same hope that we have today. The expectation that we will spend eternity sharing in the glory of our Lord. The hope we profess is that our Lord will return for us and take us to be with him for eternity. This is a hope that nothing in this life can begin to compare with.

Hebrews encourages us to hold unswervingly to this hope. Hold tightly to it. Don’t let anything distract you from it. Neither the troubles nor the pleasures of this life. Both of them are temporary. But our hope is eternal.

Our hope is in the promise made to us. The promise is that if we confess Jesus as our Lord and place our hope and trust in him, we will be saved from the fate awaiting this world (Rom. 10:9-10). The one who made that promise is faithful. We can depend on him to fulfill his promise to us. So, regardless of what you face in this life, whether good or bad, hold tightly to your hope. Keep it at the center of your life. Don’t let anyone or anything move you away from it.
