The law from your mouth is more precious to me
Psalm 119:72 NIV
than thousands of pieces of silver and gold.
How important is the Bible to you? Is it just a book that sits on your shelf? A book that is largely irrelevant to your everyday life and hard to understand? Or is it something more?
The psalmist here expressed that the law of God, God’s word, was more precious to him than silver or gold. And it can seem strange why anyone would place that value on a set of laws.
But the word translated here as law is torah. And it can mean law or regulation. But it also means teaching or instruction. The psalmist is saying here that God’s instruction to him has more value than anything this world has to offer.
And that should characterize our view of the Bible. It is not just a dry book filled with ancient history and sometimes incomprehensible laws. But it is God’s instruction to us. It helps us to know God better than we ever could without it. And it helps us to live in a way that is pleasing to him. And what is more important than that? We should delight in spending time in God’s word and learning what he has to teach us. It can be challenging. But it is well worth the time and effort.
Oh God, the instruction you give to me in your word is more precious than gold, or anything else this world has to offer (my own paraphrase of Psalm 119:72).
Amen
