Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.

For a grapevine to produce grapes, at least three things are required. A grapevine, branches growing from the vine, and someone to properly prune the branches so that they do more than produce leaves. This is a vast oversimplification of the grape-growing process, but it is an example that Jesus used to illustrate the importance of abiding in Him.
Jesus identified Himself as the vine and His Father as the vinedresser (John 15:1). He identified His disciples as the branches (John 15:5). And He told them that they would only be able to produce fruit if they were to abide in Him.
But what does it mean to abide in Christ? The Greek word translated as ‘abide’ is ‘menō’, a word meaning ‘to stay (in a given place, state, relation, or expectancy)’. In this passage, to abide literally means to stay connected to the vine. Apart from that connection, we will be fruitless and good for nothing other than being cast into the fire (John 15:6).
What is meant by the expression ‘and I in you’ is ambiguous. But it does represent an intimate relationship between the vine and the attached branch. When the branch is connected, the life-giving sap of the vine flows through the branch and is responsible for the fruit production.
For a branch, abiding in the vine is a passive affair. But not so with disciples of Jesus. Jesus tells us to abide in Him. To allow His life to flow through us. This does not happen by accident. It involves holding tightly to Him. Seeking His will. And being obedient to it. Only when I do that, when I am abiding in Christ, and He in me, will I be fruitful.
